I have been running my 31 now for a year. I went through the same thing with the electronics as I was looking for both upper and lower units. Since space is an issue and I hate the clutter of multiple units, I went for a Furuno Navnet system. After 1 season, I couldn't be more pleased with the performance. I only have FF and Chartplotter, however they are networked and are able to talk to eachother between upper & lower. Best part is that there is only one transducer & I can be in different modes simultaneously (b/t upper and lower). Navnet also alows you to expand to radar later on if you buy the right unit. You can also add autopilot to the network.
Eveyone told me "you will never be down below." Well, I find that I am on the flybidge when runnging/scouting a good fishing spot, then on the lower helm during trolling. We are usually messing with the lines often, which takes several people. Also, at the lower station you have easy access to food, drink, etc. and don't have to constanly be asking your crew. Also, in cold or sloppy weather, you can't beat the lower station even if you have an enclosure for the bridge.
Everyone uses their boat differently so you really have to think about what is appropriate for your use.
