Vic's method is simple and reliable. However for fire a fuse should be connected right before it connects to the battery. If a short occurs on this wire to the alternator the fuse will blow preventing a fire. The alternator diode will also blow but that is not an expensive fix. A fire is a very expensive fix maybe even your life. It happened to me a fire that is. On one of my Isuzu Diesels (Car)A fire but lucklly I had a fire extingisher handy but with an arm in a cast at the time it was no fun. Then had to clean all the highly corrosive chemical off. What a mess. We lost a TV Live truck here last year do to a fire. It was determined that a wire direct to the battery was unfused and got pinched somehow and away it cooked. Burned like an inferno (Gas) in an upscale neighborhood in Naples to boot. Embarrasing for the company as well. These high amperage fuses only cost about $8. A # 10 wire fuse is even cheaper. So I've seen firsthand from battery wires not being fused and the results were never pretty. Dave K
