Mike,

Is you drain plug in the bilge (about 2-3 ft forward of the transom on the starboard side) or in the transom.

I have never seen on original one in the transom, always in the bilge. If yours in the transom it was probably added by a former owner.

Actually, I tend to think the bilge is probably better because you never have to disrupt the core material where there will ALWAYS be some moisture.

Any thoughts?
