UV is on target with the "how to" for producing power in diesels. 3208's are good engines and plenty of power for a 31. If your looking for speed however, your enemy is not power, but engine/gear weight. Although optional equipment, Cats are twice the weight, or almost, of gas, or light diesel. The 31 hull size is hardpressed to "handle, or support" what might be termed the higher speeds with this weight. I'm familiar with two 31's , done by great yards when smaller, light weight diesels were not available, one had Volvo 62 series, the other "Southbound", with 300hp+ 3208s. In the case of the Southbound the owner insisted on that particular eng. installation. They both shared the characteristic of looking like a barefoot water skier going through the water, at cruise, giving the 31 a new meaning of wet boat.
The other drawback was that when, particularly the Southbound, wasn't running, boat yards were trying to put it back together. I spoke with Dave Wrigley in Sept. he did the "Southbound" several times [Sevice manager,Canyon Club] who has and still is doing conversions for 25+ years. Dave related to me many of the problems asscociated with that installation.
