Bill - the circuit (a diode bridge) that lets it energize at low speeds is out. Good news is that all the Cummins up until a couple of years ago use Delco electrics (alternator and starter) so they are a dime a dozen. My solution was to convert to single wire Delcos, eliminates most of the problems. Take your alternator to a good reputable shop and tell them to rebuild it to a single wire, or just go to Pep Boys and get the same frame size in single wire. Only wire to the alternator will be the heavy one to the battery. With the single wire you have to rev it up in neutral upon start up to energize it (if it's been run in the last week or so, will have enough residual magnetism to go active right off the bat) and then will stay energized at any speed. Instead of spending $300 on an alternator, try $40 a pop at the auto parts store. A puller for the pulley is about 6 or 8 bucks, and an air impact wrench makes changing the pulley a lot easier.
Gas guys, don't do this as these don't have the flame arrestor screen.
