In Response To: Re: Engine Beds (FRANK)

I have a 62/270hp Cummins[installed 01]. Because of 11' shaft angle etc. I couldn't use, in any sense, the orign. mounts, or dimensions, instead had to mount engines in "mid air", make drawings, calculations etc. can't help you with that aspect of mounts[subject of it's own]. However on mount construction I have several suggestions. For inboard mount I used "new" 2"x12"oak[board on each side of stringer]. Filled space [sandwiched] between verticle oak with West mix and fitted marine ply., fitted to the top of stringer, it worked perfect. The top of inboard mount, now a flat, wood/West surface, at predetermined angle. The outboard mount similar except much less in height, I used and cut the old inboard oak mount for outboard. I used the same sandwich procedure for it's structure. Once all wood/West beds in flat, parallel and at the correct angle I designed Aluminum mounts,1/2"x6" bar[Alu.No. extremely important, can't remember off hand] bridge in mount at front[to get at mount bolts] and continuous to the rear mount, which the rear engine mounts, off trans, to with studs. These mounts not only run from front mount to rear but have ears that saddle front and rear and are fastened by throught bolting these saddles to stringers with bolts each mount. Also important to brace from stringer to stringer, width wise, front and rear. This sounds like a great deal of work and most installation I've seen are more casual, however I was considered an "installer" by Cummins and to recieve the 6 year warranty I had to abide by their installation rules. "B" Cummins motors always mount directly to block in front, and sometimes to block in rear. If engine weight poorly distributed to all 4 mounts engine block may crack in extreme use and then not covered by warrenty. What I've learned doing all this installation work is that Cummins, for me, has been more than supportive, know what they are doing and don't guess or play, example: min. 1-1/2" shaft size, min 5" exaust, 2" water intakes etc. And as you will find out, those 270 you have aren't toys.
