Chris,
Your wot rpm is right on at 3950.
Cruise rpm is a matter of comfort depending on seas.
But do not low ball the rpm on any diesel.
People think that by running a grand under max they will make the engines last forever.
Engines are made to run at their rpms.
If you like to cruise at 3k, its okay but open the engine up from time to time to keep carbon from building up.Did a sea trial today on a pair of 6LP's I rebuilt that had sat for 4 years and corroded to a ball of powder.
Boat is a toy tender to the main 170' yacht owned by AAMCO transmission corp.
Idling out to the speed zone, the Capt. asked what the breakin was.
I brought it up on plane and pushed the throttles about thru the dash and told him, I'm doing it now.Factory warrantees tell you to vary the rpm while the rings seat.
I put a heavy cross hatch pattern on the walls to seat quickly.During my racing years, there was no time to seat the rings.
Pull up to the tree, do a burn out to melt the tire surface, green lite and run up to the rev limiter, usually set at 9k, in every gear till I crashed or passed the 1/4 mile mark.
I still treat my engine builds to the same treatment today. If the sob is gonna blow, I'd rather be there to see it. Nothin like seeing the top of an engine explode or a rod come thru the block.
Its usually followed by pretty colors............
