Ken: I cleaned mine at around 1500 hours. There was some scale on the closed system side of the tubes, but I don't think the previous owner properly maintained the coolant. The problem with cleaning the bundle tubes on older engines is that the heat exchanger is part of the exhaust manifold casting. With the manifold in place, the bundle tube hits the front gear case before it is all the way out. The Yanmar dealer recommended not removing the manifold so I used a 38 cal gun cleaning brush to swab out the inside of the tubes. To clean the outer part of the tubes, I reassembled the exhanger, filled it with straight vinegar (mild acid), left in overnight, then slid the bundle back out as far as it would go and flushed it hard with pressured water to remove the loosened scale. Came out very clean. (kind of a mess in the bilge) Though my engines never ran above the recommended temp, they ran near it during the hot summer months. After the cleaning, they topped out at 170 - 175 deg. Now I use Texaco Extended Life and change it every 150 hours. Hopefully they will stay clean for a long time. As for the impellers, I used to go 300 hours, but found some cracking last time in the vanes. This time I'll change them sooner, say 200 hours. (I put about 200 hrs a year)
Good luck.
