Unlike Bruce I had a very bad experience with the "dripping" stuffing boxes. My boat sits on a mooring , so I have no shore power and only a few batteries to keep it afloat. After a long trip I tied the boat to the mooring and the next day went down to the boat and found water just below the floor board and a dead battery. Although the stuffing boxes had always just dripped, this one trip had cause a steady stream. If I had not gone to the boat early the next morning I am sure it would have sunk.
The PSS dripless stuffing boxes are great. After three years, I have a bildge that only has fresh water in it. The best thousand bucks I ever spent on the boat. Now I can sleep at night. No modifications needed other than tapping into the raw water line for cooling.
