Holy Crap! It’s a Flying Dog!

Over the weekend, I dropped by the marina to check on the progress of the engine swap on the Sandy Point, the Virginia auction sedan I got a few months back. My naïve hopes of a couple of runs this season appear to be overly optimistic.
With time on my hands, I decided to work on the river place my wife and I are building, a three-bay garage with a 2-bedroom apartment over it (the low-budget version of UV’s fish camp). While I’ve been spending vacations and weekends there for a couple of years, I’ve yet to get an occupancy permit (that last 5% takes forever to finish, doesn’t it?).
As the sun is starting to set, I’m admiring the beautiful outside lights I just installed and thinking it’s definitely beer-thirty when one of my dogs flies out of the second-story apartment window. Annie, our terrier mutt, knocks the screen out, falls 15 feet and does a half-flip with half a twist. Never possessing Olympic-like grace, she does not “stick the landing” and lands with a wummpth on her side. The dog actually bounced 6 inches, but got right up and sauntered over to me in a bit of a daze.
She seemed fine, but we took her to the emergency vet just to make sure there was no internal damage. X-rays confirmed that Annie is one lucky bitch. The vet told us not to let her fly again without her cape. I’m definitely letting her pick this week’s lottery numbers.
