I will answer your email questions here as well. First, I think all will agree that Cummins are great motors, many people feel they are the best. The only problem is the 6 cylinder models will not fit in many B28s. The 4BTA (4BT-250) is quite tall and requires raising the deck on most models. Also the 4BT-250 is rough at low speed and has a bit of a bad reputation for eating injectors followed by engine destruction. See boatdiesel.com.
From what you said in your email, you must be looking at the 1983 in Virginia. This looks like a very unique and interesting boat. It has the 6BT, 210 HP Cummins. Probably one of the best, most reliable motors made anywhere. Very simple and easy to maitain. If they would have fit in my boat, they would have been my first choice. This boat must have came from the factory with 6 cylinder Volvos and has the longer engine boxes. Most B28s came with gas V8s and there is no (almost) way to get an inline 6 into the engine compartment. To me, this looks like a boat worth looking at seriousely. It does appear to need a little TLC. The rusty top of the engines does not help it's show quality. You may be able to use this to your advantage. If you really like the boat, spend the money on a good survey and get the present owner to fix all the problems, or drop the price accordingly. IMO, this could be a rally nice boat with a little work, at least from the pictures.
