I doubt it was any type of stray currents.

You put steel in a salt environment and it will go to crap in a short time.

The weak points are the bolts not the plate material.
If you equal the shear strength of the mounting bolts in plate material then you have it when pulling like in mast stays.

Most mast stay plates I see are made from stainless and are passivated to protect further.
I would not use aluminum on stay plates because of fracturing.
But then again its cheaper and guess what?
Were're talking about sail boats here.
