Bob,
While more expensive, I prefer the chargers like Sentry that have adjustable regulators and a tap on every batery to monitor voltage. They can be used with any type of battery because the voltage can be adjusted.Ferro resonant chargers(output voltage is fixed by the transformer) have been known to boil batteries and have a loud hum and cannot be used with batteries other than lead acid for the most part.
Multi stage or flyback chargers are good for getting the most out of deep cycle batteries such as ones used on trolling motors or house banks. They limit the charging to keep the battery from getting to warm which affects full charging on deep cycle. The term trickle charger has been used also.
The other thing about adjustable regulator chargers is that if charging thru an external isolator for some reason you can set the voltage higher to make up for the voltage drop across the isolator.
People install isolators and wonder why the batteries are not fully charged.
Some isolator diodes drop as much as one full volt.
Just my opinion.
