Craig,
For this application, epoxy is epoxy... Whatever brand you have on hand.
After sanding your project down to 180 grit, wash the wood with denatured alcohol to remove surface oils, & allow to it dry. Mix a small batch of epoxy, (resin & hardener to exact ratio), & then thin it with denatured alcohol, 25% alcohol, 75% mixed epoxy.
Liberally coat the wood and let it soak in, repeating the wet out until no more epoxy is absorbed. Wipe off all excess and let it cure over night.
The next day, re-coat the project with full strength epoxy, allow it to cure to a tacky state, & apply a second coat of epoxy. Allow it to cure over night.
Re-sand the entire project with 180 grit, being very careful not to break through exposing raw wood. Wash the surface with denatured alcohol & apply two more coats as above.
This will give you a penetration coat & 4 full coats of epoxy over a 3 day period. Allow the final two coats a minimum of 4 days before doing your final sanding in preparation to finish coats of varnish.
During this entire stage of epoxy coating, keep the project away from sun light so the epoxy doesn't yellow.
Before proceeding to varnish, wash the project with denatured alcohol, then soap and water, rinse, and dry completely.
Re-sand lightly with 220 grit paper and proceed with your varnish.
Best regards,
Patrick
