Bruce, you're partially right about what my real problem was. Upon removal of the old controls I found that every wire was spliced about 1-1/2 feet from the control. Looked like original?? Anyway lots of green corrosion.

But since I had the new unit in hand & was looking forward to the digital control features I went ahead with the replacement. The one thing I do need to do is to cut out for the square shape of the new control. The unit did ship with a plastic cover up plate so it won't look too bad when done

The side benefit was I replaced about 8 wires with 1 running up my port pillar to the fly bridge.

Out of curiosity last night I checked the web for other options (I still have one left to do) and found a company who sells a rectangular version, that may not require cutting??

I can't remember the name, I've got it at home. If anyone is interested, just e-mail me.
