John,
Sounds like your problem was a thermostat calibration. A simple fix other than spending over 300 bucks.
The old controls can also be wired to shut the fan down.
Ac units don't have expansion valves, they have capillary tubes.
Digital controls will will give you only two things over mechanical controls.
One is the ability to control the unit comming on and off within 2 degrees. It cycles the ac more thus keeping the room colder.
Second is a humidity feature while you are away from the boat.
