I like Ed's solution best. Having had a bad leak with a bad bilge pump offshore once, I learned that the forward bilge area is there for a reason, and it will hold a helluva lot of water. Removing that capacity in a real emergency could be bad. But, I agree with the concept of keeping the area under the cabin dry, if possible.
