The real difference with West System is their quality control and base material selection. Almost all of the epoxy resin and hardeners (or their component chemicals) are manufactured by much larger chemical companies (typically Fortune 500 sized companies). The guys at west have indicated that they test every batch of material they receive - not just sample test. West also uses "older" formulations in their resins compared to what the chemical manufactures have available; however, West uses materials with a long history of success in marine applications even below the water line. Of course, West will tell you that these are more expensive materials...
I only use West for general applications (glassing to existing fiberglass, glassing to wood, etc) and have never had a single problem. I think if you look at the labor costs (even your own time) the material cost difference is not that large.
