I'm on the left coast and purchased a 1978 fbsf from a guy who repowered with the H&S conversion motors. I'm not exactly sure how much hp they are putting out, however the data plate from Cummins says they are 215hp. motors, I know that H&S played around with the injector pumps and installed the intercoolers so they very well could be producing 230-250 hp. I have the Twin Disk 144:1 transmissions with 1.375 shafts. Currently we are running 19 x 21 wheels (3 blade) with a number 2 cup. Fully loaded fuel, beer, ice, bait tank full (50 gallons) we can cruise at 19.5 knots at 2150 rpm. I can turn 2600 fully loaded and get prox. 23 - 24 knots. These motors and transmissions have about 1500 hours run time since installed. I personally have put about 300 hours on them with no problems. At idle they do tend to smoke a bit but I think thats a cummins thing. Performance and reliability are spot on, but they are what they are my engines for whatever reason are painted black and look like they still belong in a dodge truck, the brackets holding the heat exchanger are flimsy and fail every 30 - 40 hours. The alternative spending $25,000 per engine for a new Cummins marine motor is not an option for me so I'm tickled pink. If and when these motors expire I definately will consider replacing them with the same conversions. One added benefit that has not been brought up all the replacement parts (i.e. hoses belts etc can be purchased from your local NAPA auto parts store. I do however suggest using a marine starter and alternator but it's not necessary. The guys from H&S are good people and stand behind their product. If you need pictures etc. let me know and I can e-mail some.
