31"s are like ice cream, everyone likes the boat but they all like different flavors,[engine brand, layout, model etc.] Choosing engines for mine I looked at how the suitable brand diesels made their power: cu.in., fuel/air pressure, RPM, etc. All diesel engine life is based on these variables. Next I checked on the cost and availability of parts, filters and the established factory service network. The warrenty and type of coverage also goes along with that. It's informative to also talk to marine diesel mechanics[the wrench turners, not the shop owners]as to their knowledge of general brand difficulty. The last area can be harder to find -Marine yards that are not brand affiliaited, but do a large number of engine conversions[various brands] every year in Bertram, Blackfin size boats,[put in any brand you buy],are very informative. Remember all brands great in boating magazines. Ask the tough questions, compile all this info. and one can form a relistic opinion and learn in the process. Is this alot of homework yep, and maybe only to me, but $40,000-$80,000 is a lot of money for something that will not meet expectations.
