Rudder post reinstall

I'm getting ready to slap my rudder posts back in and am looking for any tips or cautions that I need to be aware of. I've already built the rudder shelves and they look pretty good (everything lines up nice and should be a rock solid mounting). The rudder posts are original and in pretty good shape for 41 yrs. I've got 3/4" marine grade plywood backing plates for the posts and have the 2" holes cut in them at seemingly perfect angles to afford a straight up (90 degree to horizontal)mounting of the posts. This is where I need advice... I plan on lightly sanding the outside gelcoat and using 5200 on the outside of the hull and inside the hull under the backing plate. Should I just use a bunch of the 5200 and then tighten the bolts down essentially squeezing out much of the excess 5200 and let it set or is this the wrong approach. I just don't want to go through this process and find out it leaks. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
