Jim Wynne was a friend and racing competitor of Dick Bertram, and was the designer of the first production inboard-outboard (stern-drive) power propulsion system for boats. Wynne finished second to Dick Bertram in the 1960 Miami-Nassau Ocean Power Boat Race in a Ray Hunt designed 23 footer powered by his own Volvo inboard-outboard Aquamatics. Wynne's Aqua Hunter finished 2 hours and 25 minutes behind Bertram's 31' Moppie. Bertram collaborated with Wynne the following year to build a Bertram 24' (Ray Hunt design) powered by Wynne's system for the 1961 race. Bertram and Griffith finished 1st in the Bertram 31 Glass Moppie, and Wynne finished 8th in the Bertram 24 Yo Yo. Bertram Yacht produced the 24 footers for a short while, but then designed the Bertram 25 and the Bertram 20 with Wynne's stern drive system (as well as the Bertram 26 years later). So Wynne's involvement at Bertram was a collaborative one as I understand it.
