In Response To: Re: New rubrail is on. (Chiles)

It is a 1987 33 Sportfish. Just took possession of it 4 days ago. I was planning from the start to do something soon about the rub rail. My model/year has the typical aluminum rail that everyone dislikes, but on top of that it has a smaller stainless rail screwed directly into the aluminum. I guess they did that at the factory for a few years. There seems to be some caulk and gaskets installed, but they didn't really work and there is galvanic corrosion. It was painted at one time but most of that has peeled off. Nice little battery they made there.

So, I was planning on either:
1) removing the stainless completely, and filling the screw holes in the aluminum (don't know with what yet), or
2) To replace the outer stainless rails with PVC rails, and use tef-gel on the new screws, and hope for the best.

Now I'm wondering if I can't replace the whole aluminum rail with something else, similiar to what you did. Before now I was under the inpression that there were through-bolts along the whole rail, and I don't intend to tear the boat apart to get to all of them.

Thanks for the information. I hope your guy at Bertram has some good advice and maybe rail kits for me as well. If I can replace the rail relatively easily with a new non-corroding one like you did, I would be very happy.

I would like some advice from anybody with knowledge about:
- What to fill screw holes in aluminum with, if I go that way
- If I should coat the aluminum rail with anything after I clean it up, if I keep it.
- Whether anyone thinks it's better to install PVC on the aluminum or leave it bare.
