Generators are usually installed outboard of the port engine in that compartment. Some have been installed outboard of the starboard engine as well depending on what engine was in there.

As far as railing is concerned I have all SS 1 1/2" rail fabricated about 10" high surrounding the cockpit. This in turn just pulls out of what looks like rod holders. Just gravity holding it in and it is not easy to pull out.
