About 1860 B31's were built between 1961 and the end of production with the 1983 model year, then there were 23 Silver Anniversary models built in 1986, and that's it. Cost of a 300 hp a side gas to diesel repower done right is about 60-70K. Uning inline diesels such as the Yanmar or Cummins, there is room outboard of either engine for a genset. I have a 3 cyl. 505KW Phasor outboard of my port engine, and all that had to be removed from the engine to install was the air cleaner.
Buy one alreday converted to diesel as it's a big undertaking, including new exhaust, shafts, probably struts, larger raw water plumbing, engine beds, new fuel lines, and on and on. There are plenty of good ones out there that can be had for under 100K with sound mechanicals, and that's where the money is, in the iron.
