Here is the advice from personal experience, the board in the past, as well as what I have done to finish the v-berth.
1) Elbow grease. Putty knives, heavy grit sand paper for the glue, etc. Not much other way around that.
2) Wear the respirator mentioned in the previous post. There will be mold, and it has made some guys really sick.
Wipe it all down with bleach when you are finished!
I finished the walls with teak slatting and love the look.
