As a teen the sheriff of our county lived across the street. Never a problem for me but his stories were legendary. My favorite is about the time he stopped a dark gentleman for having no license plates. When asked he said he was getting them tomorrow. The sheriff asked for his license and the gent said he was going to get it when he got his plates. Just then from the back seat a voice said, "don't listen to him sheriff, he's dronk". True story.
